Black & White for Available Light

Kodak Professional B&W 400 is not my favorite black & white film but this shot of my son Ian taken with it shows the kind of tonal range possible when using high speed black & white film to shoot available light portraits.

Personally, I think Kodak TX-400 and Ilford HP-5 both do a better job than the Pro B&W 400 but this shot taken with my 35mm Promaster body and the 50mm f1.8 lens wide open with a shutter speed of 1/15 second, displays some of the possibilities of with this kind of picture.

This was a hand held shot so the general rule that you must have a tripod for anything less than 1/60 second is a good guideline to use but not always true. If you don’t have a tripod handy and the shot is there – take it! You may be surprised at what you can get.
